Confirmation Information
Purpose:
Confirmation is a great time in the life of a disciple of Jesus Christ. In these two years, the Confirmand and his/her family will grow in their faith in Jesus as their Savior as well as develop or continue godly habits that will serve you your whole life as a disciple of Jesus.
Method:
To do this, Confirmands and their parents are given this workbook as a guide for these two years of discipleship. This workbook is the outline of the lessons to be covered each week. We’ll begin by learning the basics of the faith as outlined in the Small Catechism. Then we’ll see how those basics fit into the whole story of the Bible. Then we’ll add to this foundation learning how to live out the faith in our daily lives in light of the Six Chief Parts of the Small Catechism and the Bible.
Students will be given pages for this workbook each module. These pages have the assignments Confirmands will do throughout these weeks. They include:
1. Home Assignments—most of these are independent assignments, but many do include a requirement to interview and record conversations with others, especially parents.
2. At Home Bible Readings—youth in Confirmation are expected to have and read the Bible on their own at home each week.
3. Learn by Heart Passages—most of these are from the Bible Readings. Other times these are Bible verses or Sections from the Small Catechism related to the Readings.
4. Worship Reports—it is expected of Confirmands that they be in church, hearing the Word every week. Lent and Advent services are also required for Confirmands.
As the Confirmands write out the Catechism, they’re learning it. As they ask their parents questions and hear them give answer to their own faith, they see the value of the Faith in their own lives. As the Confirmands read the Scriptures for themselves, they’re familiarizing themselves with their own Bibles and disciplining themselves for their devotional life. As they then take from their readings and learn verses by heart, they’re developing the skill of storing up God’s Word to be able to bring it to mind whenever they face challenges in their lives or are called upon to share their faith. As the Confirmands attend worship and learn how to use this time to grow in their faith, they’ll be learning to get the most out of every other worship service for the rest of their lives to joyfully praise God in the good times and seek God in the hard times.
Evaluation:
At the end of each module of study, Pastor will check workbooks for completion. If it has not been completed satisfactorily, Parents will be contacted to encourage their Confirmands to do so. If at the end of the year the workbook is not completed satisfactorily, the Confirmand will have to delay Confirmation until it has been completed.
